Maria Lehman Announced as 2023 President for American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
I am proud to be a Civil Engineer, and I am honored to represent the profession as ASCE President-elect – especially given the urgent need for infrastructure investment and increased importance of resilient infrastructure to our economy and our environment.
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) represents more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries. Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society. ASCE members elected Maria as president of the Society for the 2022-2023 term, after a month-long election.
Maria’s passion and energy is rooted in the ability to change the world. As an ASCE volunteer, she has been part of the society’s major transformation: seeing the need for professional development for students and younger members, changing governance structure, creating institutes, starting volunteer hill visits and the Report Card, shifting the ASCE paradigm to sustainable infrastructure, moving to electronic publications and Future World Vision.
For those who know Maria, she is highly respected within the larger civil engineering community and beyond. It comes as no surprise that this significant achievement was by election of ASCE’s own membership.
