GHD 50 years in Ontario

WATERLOO, Ont. – November 2, 2026 – GHD, a global professional services company, is celebrating 50 years of operating in Ontario. The milestone marks five decades of helping communities across the province deliver a better quality of life for families, workers, and businesses.

"As an employee-owned firm, GHD staff are proud to live, work, and play in the communities they serve,” said Ryan Shepherd, General Manager for GHD’s Canada Central region. “Indeed, the dedication and long-term commitment of our people is the driving force behind what we’ve been able to accomplish for Ontarians.”

The firm’s presence in Ontario began in 1976 with a small environmental practice focused on contaminated sites and landfill projects. Over time, Ontario has grown into one of GHD’s largest operating regions globally. That growth reflects long‑term client commitment and relationships, strategic mergers, and sustained investment. Today, more than 1,300 people work across Ontario in centres including Waterloo, Toronto, Mississauga, Whitby, Niagara, Markham, Ottawa and Peterborough.

Over the past 50 years, GHD teams have contributed to some of Ontario’s most significant environmental, water and infrastructure projects. This includes long‑term involvement in the Port Hope Area Initiative, one of Canada’s largest active remediation programmes. GHD has also partnered with York Region for over two decades on projects providing required municipal infrastructure to support growth in the region including the York Region Sewage Works Project delivering advanced treatment outcomes. The firm’s work continues on Ookwemin Minising, a major urban transformation and climate resilience initiative on Toronto’s waterfront,  and the QEW Garden City Skyway Bridge Twinning Project, a key component of Ontario’s plan Connecting the GGH: A Transportation Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

In May 2026, the firm was recognized with two Ontario Engineering Project Awards, including an Award of Distinction for the Sanofi Wastewater Treatment and Recycling Plant in Toronto. Delivered with Dillon Consulting Limited using a design‑build approach, the facility supports vaccine manufacturing by treating all wastewater on site and producing high‑purity recycled water for reuse. GHD also received an Internal Innovation Award for the Ontario Young Professionals Conference, recognizing leadership and collaboration among early‑career professionals.

“For 50 years, our people in Ontario have built their careers here while helping communities address complex challenges,” said Steve Lécuyer, Executive General Manager of Canada at GHD. “That continuity shapes how we work with clients, how we support each other and how we think about the long term. We are excited to see what the next 50 years bring.”
