Planning for the future of healthcare in Fiji

Fiji CWM Hospital priority infrastructure plan launch
Explore how a new hospital in Fiji is transforming healthcare.

The Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital in Suva is Fiji’s largest and most critical healthcare facility, managing 23,000 admissions, 5,500 births, and over 300,000 outpatient visits each year.

However, having served Fiji and the wider the Pacific region for over 100 years, the hospital now faces significant structural and maintenance challenges.
Engaged by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), GHD is collaborating with Johnstaff International Development (JID), International SOS, and Silver Thomas Hanley to deliver a master plan for the new national referral hospital, which has received funding from the Australian Government.

The project has reached a major milestone in January 2025, with the launch of the Priority Infrastructure Plan by the Prime Minister of Fiji, Sitiveni Rabuka, and the Australian High Commissioner, Ewen McDonald. The Priority Infrastructure Plan, informed by a comprehensive infrastructure assessment, identifies essential repairs and upgrades needed to maintain services at the existing hospital while the master planning process is underway.

“We are honoured to be part of this landmark project that will modernise healthcare in Fiji. This project draws on the skills of our local team in Suva and the extensive healthcare design experience of our Australian team,” says Kris Noiseux, GHD’s Country Manager, Fiji.

The project has now progressed to the site selection phase for the new hospital, with the preliminary master plan set for completion in September 2025.
