At a glance

The Burnham Military Health and Performance Centre (Tū Manawa Ora) is part of a wider programme supporting the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF)’s commitment to modern, adaptable facilities and now operates at Burnham Military Camp in Canterbury. This new medical facility places health and wellbeing at its core, delivering a high-quality working environment that responds to both current needs and long-term change for New Zealand Defence Force personnel.

The challenge

The NZDF required modern medical facilities that reflect contemporary models of care and the evolving wellbeing needs of its people. Existing services were spread across ageing, fragmented spaces that limited efficiency, adaptability and service delivery. The objective was to consolidate these services into a cohesive, adaptable facility that supports modern healthcare practice, improves the day-to-day experience for staff and visitors and remains flexible as operational and wellbeing requirements evolve. This forms part of a national programme to deliver health and wellbeing centres across Defence sites.

Our response
Medical consulting room with reclining chair, hand‑washing station, yellow privacy curtains, and dual computer workstation.

Working as part of the Defence Estate and Infrastructure Alliance (DEI Alliance), we led the exterior, interior and landscape architecture across four NZDF health and wellness centres, including the Burnham facility.

In close collaboration with NZDF, more than 90 stakeholders contributed insights into operational requirements and the evolving needs of Defence Force personnel. This feedback was carefully documented and embedded into the design at every stage.

The interior is organised around a central hub, defined by cultural flooring motifs and timber protective wall panelling that guides movement and creates a clear sense of arrival. Breakout and shared spaces encourage connection, wellbeing and informal interaction. Accessibility was integral to the design, with ramps, consulting rooms, workspaces, bathrooms and reception areas planned to provide inclusive, dignified access for all users.

The exterior architecture is practical and contemporary, responding to the local context through a durable, light industrial language. Internally, spaces are robust, resilient and welcoming.

In partnership with NZDF, a furniture, fixtures and fittings strategy was developed, incorporating Australian medical and dental standards through cross-functional and purpose-led design. A modular approach supports consistency and efficiency, with consulting rooms designed once and adapted across sites. Key services including dental, medical dispensary and reception were strategically integrated to improve workflows and maximise the shared use of staff and equipment.

The impact
Clinical preparation room with stainless steel countertops, shelving, and bright, sterile finishes.

The completed facility supports both physical and mental wellbeing, contributing to a healthier Defence Force culture and an improved day-to-day experience for staff and visitors. Energy-efficient, future-focused design reduces operational costs and contributes to greater self-sufficiency for the NZDF. Contemporary health technology and high-quality clinical environments help reduce sick days and off-base transfers, delivering operational efficiencies and long-term value.

The result is a high-quality place to work that enhances visitor experience, supports staff retention and reflects NZDF values of diversity, accessibility and holistic wellbeing.

Designed for a new generation of Defence Force personnel, the Burham Military Health and Performance Centre is a place to belong, support one another and serve the country.
