In an increasingly volatile energy ecosystem, improving energy security requires a multifaceted approach. Key strategies include enhancing interconnections between countries, boosting homegrown renewable energy generation and diversifying supply sources. By adopting these measures, countries can better prepare for future energy shocks and provide a more resilient energy system.

Collaboration versus homegrown renewables

Our research highlights the need for an energy system that is connected but not dependent. More than seven in ten energy leaders (72 percent) believe that increasing interconnections between countries and regions is an effective strategy for improving energy security.

But leaders also recognise the importance of homegrown renewable energy generation, with 72 percent identifying this as an effective security-boosting strategy. For countries with limited access to renewable resources, driving energy independence may mean utilising alternative clean energy sources.

Energy leaders also told us that by increasing reserve capacity, countries can prepare for future shocks. Three-quarters of energy leaders identify large-scale storage as an effective strategy for improving energy security.
