The challenge
The Site has been impacted by PFAS due to the historic use of AFFF during fire-fighting training. GHD have been providing technical support and advice at Army Aviation Centre Oakey in various roles since 2015. Most recently, following the completion of our role as the PMCA and Technical Advisor for the PFAS Site Investigation, GHD was engaged as the Head Contractor for the PFAS soil remediation and implementation of the site Remedial Action Plan of the Former Fire Training Area.
Our response
GHD completed a strategic review of the remedial design and undertook a data gap analysis and revised options appraisal introducing sustainable remediation principles.
As part of the Remediation Contractor role, GHD also developed the Technical Specifications and Contract documents for undertaking the works to meet the revised action plan's key objectives. The scope of work involved bench-scale and field-scale treatability trials, hydrological and geophysical modelling, mass flux modeling and assessment, excavation and treatment of PFAS-impacted soils, and a cap and containment design and implementation strategy on-site that included the development of a tailored Compaction Specification for the reuse of stabilised low-permeability soils.
