Clean energy has broad public support, but addressing concerns about affordability and reliability is vital to keeping momentum strong. Stable, long-term policies can attract investment and drive meaningful progress, while tailored communication can bridge generational divides and promote a smooth transition to a sustainable future.

Clean energy has broad public support, but addressing concerns about affordability and reliability is vital to keeping momentum strong. Stable, long-term policies can attract investment and drive meaningful progress, while tailored communication can bridge generational divides and promote a smooth transition to a sustainable future.

Enabling progress and addressing concerns

Clean energy initiatives enjoy widespread support, bolstered by a strong belief in their potential to create jobs and enhance quality of life. According to our research, citizens in all countries agree that the government should do more to grow community understanding about the importance of clean energy. However, majorities in every surveyed nation express concern that clean energy will not be affordable and reliable.

Generational divides in clean energy perceptions

Generational differences are evident, with Baby Boomers, particularly in Anglosphere countries, expressing less confidence in clean energy job creation and demonstrating less willingness to utilise government funds to expedite the transition.

The substantial public support for clean energy underscores the need for governments and the energy industry to invest in and advocate for sustainable energy solutions. At the same time, given the substantial gap in achieving decarbonised energy, it is imperative for governments to implement stable policies and regulations that incentivise long-term private capital investment.

Consistent, forward-thinking policies that endure beyond the fluctuations of electoral cycles will be more likely to attract private investors looking for stable returns and promote sustained progress toward a carbon-neutral future. Policy stability is essential for enabling the energy sector to plan and invest with confidence, creating investable locations that drive sustained economic and environmental benefits.

Bridging generational gaps through communication

The generational divide in confidence and willingness to invest public funds emphasises the importance of bespoke communication and education efforts. Addressing concerns about affordability and reliability is crucial to maintaining public support and achieving a timely transition to clean energy.

In our urgent mission to protect our planet for generations to come, the transition to low-carbon energy stands as a critical endeavour. Yet, this transition cannot be a standardised blueprint; it must honour the rich tapestry of people and communities worldwide. No two countries’ journeys toward net zero will — or should — be identical.”
