At a glance

Managing environmental information across more than 100 oil and gas sites requires data that project teams can trust. We helped the client apply a consistent, accessible source of environmental information that supports regulatory reporting, informed decision-making and responsible management of environmental programs across a large and complex portfolio.

Examine how centralized environmental data improved access, validation and portfolio-wide decision-making across 100+ oil and gas sites.

The challenge

A confidential oil and gas client managed environmental programs across more than 100 active and historical production sites within a mature producing region. Environmental information had been collected over several decades by different consultants, laboratories and project teams.

Historically, data was dispersed across spreadsheets and other databases, all filled separately across consultant-managed systems. Information was stored in different formats and locations, making it difficult to locate records, compare results and build a complete view of site conditions across the portfolio.

Monitoring locations, laboratory results and spatial information were not consistently connected, which complicated site assessments and broader portfolio reviews. Project teams often spent additional time validating data, reconciling records and preparing information for reporting.

The client needed a practical solution that could support ongoing growth while improving access to reliable environmental information.

Our response

We implemented a Laboratory and Data Management Program (LDMP) centered on a secure EQuIS database that brings environmental information together in one location. Historical records, monitoring locations, field observations, sample details and analytical results were consolidated into a structured framework that provides a trusted source of environmental information across the portfolio.

With the client, we applied standardized processes for integrating field and laboratory data from multiple consultants and laboratories. The program also introduced direct integration of electronic laboratory deliverables, including data sources that had not previously been compatible with EQuIS. The program introduced automated validation, reducing review time and improving confidence in data quality.

To support day-to-day data collection, we applied field templates and submission workflows that allowed participating consultants to provide information through simple email-based processes. This improved consistency between field observations and laboratory datasets while reducing administrative effort.

We also developed secure web tools, Geographic Information System (GIS) applications, Power BI dashboards and custom reporting solutions. These tools give project teams fast access to information, helping them explore trends, view site conditions and support environmental decision-making across the portfolio.

The impact

The client now manages environmental information through a single platform that supports more than 100 active and historical production sites.

Project teams can access consistent information through web-enabled tools, GIS applications and interactive dashboards. Better visibility of environmental data supports faster reporting, stronger oversight of environmental programs and more informed decision-making.

The program reduced the effort required to manage large volumes of information collected from many different sources. Automated processes and common data reporting formats improved efficiency while supporting regulatory requirements and long-term environmental management objectives.

Today, the client has a scalable data management framework that strengthens confidence in environmental information and provides a strong foundation for future portfolio management.
