What is the Fourth Industrial Revolution?

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0, is a concept coined by Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), encompassing the current and evolving landscape where revolutionary technologies and trends are reshaping our lifestyles, occupations, and social interactions.

There are four flagship technological domains which converge in the 4IR. The first is nanotechnology, which involved manipulating matter at the nanoscale to create new materials and devices with enhanced properties. Electronics, medicine, science, and energy are industries that apply this technology. Biotechnology works with biological processes and organisms to develop innovative solutions in health care, agriculture and environmental sustainability. It includes areas like genetic engineering, synthetic biology, and bioinformatics.

Advances in material science have led to the development of novel materials with remarkable properties, enabling breakthroughs in various industries. Examples include graphene, carbon nanotubes, and metamaterials. Last but not least, advanced digital production (ADP) technologies encompass a range of digital manufacturing techniques, including additive manufacturing (3D printing), robotics, automation, and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). These technologies revolutionise production processes, enabling greater customisation, efficiency and flexibility.

Why does Industry 4.0 matter?

The 4IR marks a significant transformation in human advancement, driven by extraordinary technological progress that rivals the remarkable changes witnessed during the first three industrial revolutions. These advancements are converging physical, digital and biological realms, presenting both immense opportunities as well as potential risks. The rapid pace, extensive scope and profound impact of this revolution compel us to reconsider the principles of national development, the value-creation process for organisations, and even the fundamental essence of humanity.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution offers unique opportunities for innovation, growth and social impact but poses significant challenges to governance, security, ethics and sustainability. Hence, we must collaborate in a manner unprecedented in history. Everyone bears a crucial responsibility in shaping the future, whether they hold positions of power in governments or businesses or are passionate activists or concerned citizens.
