STEM Pathways
STEM Pathways began with a simple question: how do we help young women see themselves in STEM careers before they decide those careers aren't for them?
Since 2017, the program has connected female students, schools and industry, providing real-world exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through project-based learning, mentoring, workplace experiences and conversations with industry professionals, students gain insight into the opportunities available in STEM and how their interests can translate into meaningful careers.
One of the most powerful aspects of STEM Pathways is the opportunity for students to connect with people working across STEM industries. By meeting engineers, scientists, environmental professionals and other industry practitioners, students gain relatable role models who can share their experiences, challenges and career journeys. Seeing people who have followed different career journeys helps students broaden their understanding of what is possible, build confidence in their own potential, and develop a stronger sense of belonging in STEM. These connections can be transformative, turning STEM from an abstract concept into an achievable future.
The program also challenges common misconceptions about what scientists and engineers do. Many students picture STEM roles as being confined to laboratories or focused on complex mathematics and highly specialised technical work. Through direct engagement with industry professionals and real-world projects, students discover that STEM careers are diverse, creative and collaborative. They involve problem-solving, teamwork, communication and innovation. This helps students see how their own interests and strengths can align with STEM careers, making these pathways feel more accessible. Created in Melbourne and now delivered across a range of locations and formats, STEM Pathways helps students explore pathways they may not have previously considered, while building stronger connections between schools, communities and industry.
What is STEM Pathways?
STEM Pathways is an immersive work experience program for female Year 10 students that provides first-hand exposure to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Students gain practical experience through a mix of project-based learning, workplace experiences, mentoring, workshops and site visits. Programs are tailored to suit different organisations, communities and locations. Depending on the format, students may work together on a simulated project for a real client, explore different STEM disciplines through specialist sessions, or engage directly with industry professionals to learn how STEM is applied in practice.
Supported by graduate-level buddies and industry mentors, participants develop practical skills, build confidence, collaborate with peers and gain insight into the diverse opportunities available across the STEM sector.
Over the past 10 years, STEM Pathways has continued to evolve to meet the needs of different students and communities. What began in Melbourne has expanded to Geelong, Wodonga, Traralgon, Canberra and Darwin. We have also supported other organisations to run their own versions of the program, including Yarra Valley Water, Victoria’s Department of Transport and Coliban Water.
The program has also been adapted for Indigenous students and regional communities. During COVID-19 lockdowns, it shifted online and supported the largest cohort in the program's history.
The impact extends beyond the program itself, with 80 percent of participants from the original partner school going on to pursue STEM studies at university.
By connecting students with industry professionals and real-world STEM experiences, the program helps young women explore future career possibilities, build confidence and develop valuable skills. At the same time, industry participants can inspire the next generation, strengthen community connections and help shape the future workforce.
Together, we are creating pathways, broadening aspirations and investing in the innovators and problem-solvers of tomorrow.
