When the road keeps failing, try thinking inside the tire
A recent feature explored how GHD is helping advance the use of tire-derived aggregate (TDA), a lightweight material made from recycled tires that is being used to address complex infrastructure challenges across California. Through work with CalRecycle and other partners, GHD has supported TDA applications ranging from roadway stabilization and retaining wall backfill to stormwater management and rail projects.
The article highlights how TDA was used to stabilize a repeatedly failing roadway in Mendocino County, demonstrating the material's potential to provide cost-effective and sustainable engineering solutions. It also explores GHD's broader role in researching, testing and implementing TDA applications that help communities address infrastructure needs while creating beneficial uses for end-of-life tires that contribute to a circular economy.
